  • Tips: Strap Retainers

How to fix that annoying issue of all those straps hanging loosely off of your pack. It’s way to easy to snag or get caught up in your own straps.

    step1sr

    Ingredients

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    • Scissors or Knife
    • Velcro (If you’re unfortunate enough to have the kind with a sticky back just soak it in a Goo remover for a couple hours and scrape it off)
    • Small sewing Kit (Needle, Thread, and Pins)
    • Seam Sealer(Not Necessary)
    • A hanging strap

    step2sr

    Step 1

You have two ways to go here you can go, either cut off the part where it’s sewn over or take a knife to the thread holding it closed.

    step3sr

    Step 3

You’ll need a small strip about an inch and a half long of both the parts of Velcro. They Can be as thick or as thin as you like.  Make sure you have them facing opposite directions with a bit of overlap.

    step5sr

    Step 4

You have the options here, you can either just sew up the whole thing and call it good, or use some form of seam sealer or glue to hold the whole mess together.  I strongly recommend just sewing but if you don’t want to bother glue can work in a pinch.

    step4sr

    Step 5

Fold the strap over the two pieces of Velcro and pin it together to make it easier to sew.

    step6sr

    Step 6

    Sew it up.

It doesn’t really matter how good it looks because most of the time you won’t be seeing your handy work.

    step7sr

    Step 7

Roll it up and hook Velcro together.

It feels so good to have all those damn straps under control.

    All the Items Needed
    All the Items Needed

To get started here’s what you’ll need:

    • Stove and Fuel
    • Pot with a Cover
    • Muffin Tin (I used a cut up soda can)
    • Muffin Mix
    • Bag to Mix it in
    • Something to get the muffin Tin off the bottom of the Pot

    Poor Mix into Bag
    Poor Mix into Bag

    First Step

Prior to going out I’d have the mix already in a zip top baggie in the amount that I’d be using on the trip.

Add Water and Kneed till thick
Add Water and Knead till thick

    Second Step

Add water a little at a time and knead the mix. The goal here is consistency, you’re aiming for really thick but still having all the mix dissolved.

Rocks on bottom of pot to Hold Muffin Tin Off the Bottom
Rocks on bottom of pot to Hold Muffin Tin Off the Bottom

    Third Step

Add water to the pot. This will be your cooking medium so make sure you have enough in there.

You’ll need to find something to put on the bottom of your pot to lift the muffin tin off the bottom.

You also want to keep the tin away from the sides.

I used rocks in this case.

Put Muffin tin on top of Rocks
Put Muffin tin on top of Rocks

    Fourth Step

    Pour mix into muffin tin.

Place the tin on top of the rocks.

Make sure that it’s pretty stable or else it could be dislodged by a heavy boil.

    Ignite Stove and Cook
    Ignite Stove and Cook

    Fifth Stove

Ignite stove and let it boil. You can’t really over steam cook something so just make sure to cook it long enough.

I’d shoot for letting it bake for about 10 minutes to start with.

Cooking time will vary greatly with the size of the muffin tin and the amount of mix you put in it.

A word of warning though steam baking uses A LOT OF FUEL so only do this on your expedition if fuel isn’t that big of a concern.

    Enjoy!
    Enjoy!

    Sixth Step

    ENJOY!

So I’m back home now.  I took lots and lots and lots of pictures to share wiff you all!  Very excited to be home, if that wasn’t abundantly clear.  Ended up watching my grandma’s dogs and sitting in the trailer with her and my mom, because she didn’t really want to do anything, and didn’t really want us to do anything either.  I think she just didn’t want to be alone, and completely forgot that I hadn’t been there in 7 years, so was essentially missing out on a lot by sitting there, doing nothing.  Only had one tick actually latch on to me, and the other on just wandered around on my pants aimlessly.  My cousin and her frined got sick on the way up there, so didn’t really have a great time either, but they got to check out a concert.  My grandma had a good time, so that’s good, and my mom wants to make another trip with me, KoBach and my dad, so I’m up for that.  I’ll post the pics soon, too tired right now, and still need to sort through them.

I have some news: If any Wogs out there are interested in purchasing(or co-purchasing) 92 acres of wild wood up in Mahtawa, MN(near Barnum), please let me know, my ass-hole uncle is selling it, in spite of the fact that our family has been going up there for decades(it was family land until he bought it from my grandpa for back-taxes, leaving the rest of us with 10 acres).  If he manages to sell it, it’s very likely that I, and my brothers/cousins/uncles will never be able to set foot on that land again.  I grew up fishing, camping, and cooking out on that land, and he’s willing to deny us the chance to keep it by asking $298, 000 for it!  No one in our family can afford that, and he only makes it up there once a year(if that, while my uncles, and grandfather(when he was alive and able) take/took care of that land)!  Like I said, it’s 92 acres, and has an unfinished cabin over looking the lake, too.  It would cost several thousand more than the asking price to finish the cabin, get it plumbed and to get electricity out there(the cabin is wired, and has a generator at the moment).  If anyone is interested in learning more, please contact me via email at brokenhappy@gmail.com.

Edit: I just found out tonight that my dad is going to try to buy the land back from my uncle for back taxes(heh), but I would still like to hear from people on the subject, and I would really love some suggestions, too.
